About Us |

|
Newmillerdam Karate Club was founded in 1968 by Sensei Donald Snaith - 1st Dan Muchindo at the Lakeside Methodist Centre, Newmillerdam in Wakefield.
Newmillerdam is the oldest established Karate club in Wakefield. It’s Chief Instructor, Ann Walker, has been there since 1972 and holds grades of 7th Dan Wado-Ryu, 4th Dan Muchindo, 1st Dan Ju-Jitsu. Shian Ann Walker is also the Founder and Executive Member to WYSOK.
Newmillerdam is proud to belong to both WYSOK and NAKMAS governing bodies. The club caters for all age groups, holding a special Pee Wee class for those aged 3 - 8 years old, for the young to the older age categories. In Karate there is no such thing as age, everyone works to the best of their abilities.
The Club is traditional and prides itself on staying that way. We have in attendance 15 Adult and 13 Junior Dan Grades (Black Belts) in many styles i.e. Wado-Ryu, Muchindo, Shotokan, Ju-Jitsu, Sai-Jutsu, Nunchaku-Jutsu, Jo-Jutsu & Tonfa-Jutsu.
All our Dan Grades are first aiders and are registered instructors with up to date qualifications. All our adult instructors have up to date Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) checks.
Karate has one of the biggest drop out rates of any sport. If you want to be Bruce Lee over night, then we are not for you, but, if you want to commit and train hard over at least 3 years we will do our best to make you the best you can be. Our commitment to you is that we will always be there for you, we will endeavour to help you reach as high as possible in whatever martial art you wish to undertake. We will always encourage and support you throughout your training. We will never demoralise or ignore you. Karate moulds your personality, it will give you confidence and a sense of pride in what you do as well as the determination to do what you want to do.
We are a friendly, non intimidating club that makes everyone welcome, no matter what creed or colour. Over the years the club has done many sponsored events for different causes. Some of these included a 20 mile barefoot walk, a 50 mile bike ride, some of our members climbed Mount Snowden and Scarfell Pike, a sponsored swim of 50 lengths, many sponsored tile breaks and demonstrations for schools and old folks homes throughout West Yorkshire. We have been involved in events with Chris Tarrant, Michael Aspel, Michael Barrymore, Duncan Goodhew Calendar, Radio Leeds, Carlton TV and the local press. We have made world record attempts and enjoyed many Ninja Courses. We have also gone to Greece and Bulgaria to compete for our country against their top fighters! We are always looking for new, exciting Challenges!! |
